Art Nizzi at G&L Clothing is a one-of-a-kind employee -- he has worked for the same company for 60 years. He was hired by Meyer Levine (the "L" in G&L) in 1947, has worked at all seven G&L locations and for all three store owners.
Art Nizzi has seen it all in his 60 years with G&L, including robberies, floods and fires. In 1947, he checked customers out using an adding machine and push-button style cash register; today he looks up inventory and customer history using a networked computer. Art stopped working on the sales floor several years ago but still handles some of the commercial accounts. As for retirement, Art says, "... If you enjoy your work, it's just like retirement."
When Art started working at G&L Clothing in 1947, there was just one small stack of Carhartt brown duck bib overalls "for the railroad workers". Now G&L Clothing is one of the largest independent Carhartt retailers in the United States and stocks tens of thousands of Carhartt clothing items.
G&L opened in 1917 at Seventh and Mulberry Streets in downtown Des Moines and has always been located in or near downtown. Three families have been involved in the store ownership through the years -- Meyer Levine (the "L" in G&L), Harry Winner and, since 1981, the Marcovis family.
